For users, a hybrid app looks like a native app. The hybrid app is downloaded like a native app via the app store and installed on the device. In the background, however, there is an essential difference. The complete app is installed, whereby the largest part of the app is implemented with web technologies such as HTML, CSS or JavaScript. The files are included in the app package. The app is completely available offline after installation. When the hybrid app is opened, it is started via a browser-like interface which works similar to a web app.
In contrast to web apps, however, hybrid apps use WebViews instead of web browsers. These WebViews are used to display the web content of the app. The native browser rendering engine of the device (but not the browser itself) is used and provides the user with a user-friendly interface. The use of hybrid apps also offers the user a consistent user experience across different platforms, browsers and devices, as the uniform code functions equally on all platforms.
Using plug-ins, hybrid apps can access native device hardware such as the camera, microphone or GPS. This use of plug-ins for hybrid apps offers app operators the opportunity to use numerous functions and thus also improve the user experience. Hybrid apps can also be used without an existing Internet connection, as they can also function independently offline.
