A cloud provider that starts buying hydroelectric power plants: With around 110 data centers in roughly 100 cities worldwide, the company’s energy needs are also growing steadily.

Anexia has already taken the first step in this direction: A small hydroelectric power plant in the Liesingtal valley in Styria now covers a significant portion of the Vienna data center’s electricity needs. For Alexander Windbichler, CEO of the Anexia Group, this is not a one-off project but the beginning of a longer-term initiative – additional hydroelectric, as well as solar and wind power plants, are set to follow, provided suitable acquisition opportunities can be identified.

We want to become independent of the electricity market by generating our own power.

– Alexander Windbichler, Anexia Group CEO

From the perspective of the Austrian technology company, generating its own energy is a logical complement to its core business, rather than being separate from it. Operating data centers directly at power plant sites would also save on grid costs in the long term.

Ultimately, the energy strategy is based on the same principle that Windbichler pursues in his core digital business: reducing dependencies. His experience with Broadcom’s license printing has shown him how quickly companies can become vulnerable to blackmail by individual providers – whether it comes to energy or data.
