“You either shrink – or you grow.” How Anexia became one of Europe’s leading independent infrastructure companies in 20 years.

Twenty years is not a number. It is the result of a decision made again and again, every single day: to keep going, to grow, to take responsibility – even when standing still would have been easier. Alexander Windbichler founded Anexia in 2006 in Klagenfurt – as an internet service provider and cloud provider from Austria with the ambition to turn technology into real value. Today, Anexia operates 100 data centers worldwide, employs over 500 people, and serves 210,000 customers across 70 countries with cloud and network infrastructure.

“AI makes us extremely fast – but Europe must decide for itself what infrastructure that runs on.”

AI as a Multiplier – Not a Threat

In his portrait for Austrian daily Kleine Zeitung, Windbichler talks about artificial intelligence not as a threat to jobs, but as a multiplier for the workforce. And he raises a question that goes far beyond technology: why aren’t we using a share of education budgets to give students across Austria and Europe access to the world’s best AI models?

Digital Sovereignty Starts at the Infrastructure Level

As a cloud provider headquartered in Austria, Anexia is subject exclusively to European law – not the US Cloud Act. That means no extraterritorial access to customer data, no legal gray areas around jurisdiction. Digital sovereignty is not built through software labels or cloud regions with a European address – it is built where data is actually processed, under which law, and by whom.
