GameJam 2016

Last weekend, the third Game Jam was held at Alpe Adria University in Klagenfurt, Austria. The objective of the event was for small groups to develop a game based on certain criteria within 48 hours. On the final day, the groups were able to present the results of the work they performed during the past two days. Since we were on board this year as a sponsor, there was no way were going to miss the finale 🙂

The topic for the game development was put together from one keyword and two pictures from Rory’s Story Cubes. The result: a combination of the keyword “motion” and the pictures of a fairy and a rice bowl. Further specifications included:

  • All sorts of games are allowed, eg. video games, board games, card games, etc.
  • Your game must fit the topic.
  • You can work in a group (preferred) or alone.
  • You can use pre-existing code, like libraries or code samples.
  • You can use pre-existing art, like from OpenGameArt or FreeSound.
  • You can use external tools like Tiled or Spine 2D.
  • Do not re-skin an already existing game or prototype!
  • You must publish the source of your game, e.g. to GitHub.
  • Your art, sound, and music must be licensed under Creative Commons.
  • You must submit your game to the itch.io Jam page before 17.04. 16:00 CEST

In the end, 8 games all developed based on the criteria named above were presented – but they couldn’t have been any more different. Each group really gave it a lot of thought and put their heart and soul into conceptualizing, designing, and developing their game in those 48 hours. The following games were created:

Following the presentations, all games were available for testing, allowing everyone to see the games for themselves and decide the winner. All attendees had two votes to cast. In the end, there were two 1st place winners and a 3rd place. For this tie, specific criteria were set ahead of time to decide on final placement:

„These are optional criteria your game can match if you want to. If two games end up with equal ranks after voting, the diversifiers make the difference.

  • Look at my mobile – It runs on a mobile phone.
  • Not only epic, but also ethic – Players face choices on ethics.
  • Hit F5 for quicksave – Game supports save games“

In the end, the following three teams came out on top:

2nd place: Rice Rain

3rd place: Don’t trust the fairy
